Hartpury’s School Council

Why do we have a School’s Council?

The School Council is an ideal opportunity for pupils to be more involved in the running of the school. All pupils can communicate their opinions and feelings through their School Councillors. Being on the School Council helps pupils to develop skills such as confidence, communication and negotiation. It is the responsibility of each Councillor to make sure they share both their own views and the views of all the other pupils they represent.

Who can be a member of the School’s Council?

The School Council is made up of a boy and a girl in each year group from Year 1 to Year 6. At the beginning of the school year, candidates give a short presentation explaining why they should be elected. Their class then votes for a candidate and new school councillors are elected.

What do we do?

We meet weekly with Mrs Ferguson to take part in discussions about the school and upcoming events. We ask our classes for ideas and feedback to them things we have discussed in our meetings. Sometimes we do extra activities at home to help plan for events. There is a small budget for us to spend on improving our school environment.

What have we done so far?

We have made a big difference to our playground over the last few years by purchasing goalposts, planting willow structures and placing ornamental statues in our spiritual garden. We have been involved in choosing events and creating advertising for special events such as World Book Day. Our next big task is to make our school more eco-friendly.
