Maths

Here at Hartpury we believe mathematics equips pupils with a uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem solving skills and the ability to think in abstract ways.

Mathematics is important in everyday life. It is integral to all aspects of life and with this in mind we endeavour to ensure that children develop a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards mathematics that will stay with them.

The foundations of mathematics are being able to calculate using the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). We have adopted the calculation policy of Pearson Abacus to teach these methods, which is available here:

Maths Online

We subscribe to two maths website, MyMaths and Sumdog and these are often used for homework, although children may access them at any time to play maths games. Every children has a login for these websites (please ask class teachers if a reminder is needed!).

MyMaths works best on computers or laptops but can be used on tablets. Please note that, if using an iPad, it must be accessed through the ‘Puffin Academy’ app available in the app store. The great thing about MyMaths is that there are lessons that accompany each homework, so if your child gets stuck and you are not sure how to help, click on the ‘L’ in the top right corner and work through the lesson together.

Sumdog is a fantastic mathematical games environment which gets the children very excited! Through our subscription we are able to manage and assess the maths  skills children practice whilst they enjoy playing a wide range of fun games. There are also regular national and county competitions which we enter – in July we were very proud to be the winners of the Gloucestershire competition!

 Maths Focus Weeks

This year we are introducing maths focus weeks each term. During this week, we will focus on one particular aspect of maths and split into small groups across the whole school every day for a week, aiming to make some big strides forward in our learning, as well as having some mathematical fun! Our first Focus Week will be in November and we will be concentrating on multiplication.
