20 Jan 2012 - Spellathon

‘This is just about the best integration of imagination, education, technology inclusiveness and fun that I’ve ever encountered. I am very proud to have been involved in it, even in the smallest way.’  Stephen Fry

Dear Parent / Carer,

From the 5th – 11th March 2012 our school will join the world to compete in the first ever digital Spellathon Championships! With the world watching, amazing prizes and the chance for you and your children to take part, improve their spelling and raise funds for our school and Mencap, this is a competition like no other!

Everyone can get involved. At school your children are being asked to pledge a target number of words to spell correctly whilst practising at home ahead of the championships. They can do this by playing fun Spellathon spelling games that are free to download, on a computer, mobile phone or tablet. Spellathon games have been specifically designed to support the National Curriculum and encourage learning through engagement. Spellings are age and level specific allowing games to be tailored to your child’s requirements.

By visiting www.spellathon.net or downloading the Spellathon mobile applications, your child can create their own bee profile and access all the FREE Spellathon games. A JustGiving page will be automatically set up and they can start fund raising whilst playing. All words that are spelt correctly are ‘banked’ in their own hive and their scores are displayed on the global leader board!

Please help by encouraging your children to play Spellathon at home, sponsor them to improve their spelling and help them email and promote their JustGiving page to friends and family. Remember, In addition to raising vital funds for Mencap; the voice of learning disability, your children’s school will also benefit by receiving 25% of the money its students raise!

Why not take part yourself? Spellathon is designed to challenge all ages and entertain everyone. As well as an adult level, that contains the most difficult words in the dictionary, there are specialist bees to challenge. These word packs contain subject specific vocabulary from law to medicine! The more funds you raise, the more specialist bees you can unlock.

You and your child can even qualify to compete LIVE online against Stephen Fry in ‘The Reverse Spellathon Challenge’ to be held at the end of February 2012.

The Spellathon Championships are open to all ages and will take place online in March 2012. School children who wish to enter will complete the challenge in their school’s ICT suite. Others may log on from their home PC. Individuals will have 15 minutes to record the longest word run of correctly spelt words.

Please visit www.spellathon.net to join the buzz and be a part of something really special.
